The Missions Call

The Spirit places different burdens upon our hearts. Some have a supernatural burden or call to travel abroad and share the faith with unreached groups. 

Take Jim Elliot for example. One of the most well known missionaries who ministered to the Waorani tribe in South America encourages us with these words, “Rest in this: it is his business to lead, command, impel, send, call or whatever you want to call it. It is your business to obey, follow, move, respond, or what have you.” In his life we find a man moved from a very young age to preach the good news of Jesus Christ and follow God’s will and calling on his life.

Romans 15 gives an example of “some are called, some are not”. In his letter to the church in Rome, we see Paul preparing to go to Spain but mention that he hopes to pass by Rome on his way. As he writes to the church in Rome, he does not mention for them to join him, but instead he implores them to help him on his way there (vs 24), strive together in prayer for him (vs 30) and be hospitable to him, so that he may be refreshed in their company (vs 32). Here Paul shows a clear distinction in the individual and unified work the saints are meant to undertake in the role of missions. 

1 Peter 2:9 calls each individual Christian to proclaim the excellencies of him who called them out of darkness. Therefore, whether we go out to do mission work on the ground, pray for those going or help in funding trips, let us partake in our calling as the body, knowing the task that we have been given and honouring the Lord through our uncompromised dedication.  

Missionary work is not limited to overseas trips. Even here at home, we must take the mantle up and bring the gospel to those near us. Be it at home or abroad, the mission stays the same: preach the good news.
